The NFL is planning to add another five teams to the playoff mix.
The league announced Tuesday that it will add the San Diego Chargers, Detroit Lions, Green Bay Packers, New Orleans Saints and New York Jets to the conference.
That makes four more teams than the league originally projected when it started the playoffs.
The move will allow the NFL to expand its playoff format to 12 teams.
The NFL also plans to add a third division to the league.
The other four divisions will be the AFC, NFC East, NFC West and AFC South.
The addition of teams in the playoffs will give the league the ability to field its first team in each conference.
The teams will join the Kansas City Chiefs, Denver Broncos, Cincinnati Bengals, Philadelphia Eagles and New England Patriots as expansion teams.
In addition, the Miami Dolphins, Philadelphia Phillies, Minnesota Vikings and San Diego Padres will join.
The Chargers, Lions, Packers and Jets will be in the playoff picture when the regular season begins.
